How to Shadow English: A Short Drill That Stays Honest
Listen, speak with the audio, then say the same idea in your own words. Ten minutes, one clip, no hour-long performance.

Shadowing means speaking along with English you can hear, a fraction of a second behind the voice, copying rhythm more than every sound. People recommend it as if an hour of murmuring a podcast will produce fluency. An hour mostly produces a sore jaw and a feeling of virtue. Ten minutes on one short clip, followed by your own sentence, is the version that changes what you say tomorrow.
What you are copying
You are not trying to become the speaker. You are borrowing three things they do well:
- Where the sentence is loud, and where it is quiet.
- How words lean into each other. "Want to" is not two separate announcements.
- The length of a thought before they breathe.
Accent imitation is optional and easy to overdo. If you spend the ten minutes forcing a vowel you cannot hear, you are in a different drill. That drill is how to practice English pronunciation. Shadowing can sit beside it. It should not replace a conversation, and it should not replace a vowel you still cannot distinguish.
Pick a clip that is almost easy
Choose thirty to sixty seconds. Not a scene you love and do not understand. You should already know almost every word. A clip that is too hard becomes mumbling. A clip that is too easy becomes boredom, which is acceptable for a week and then you change the clip.
Good sources: one answer in an interview, a short recipe step, a paragraph of a book you are already reading, a line you heard at work and can play again. One speaker is easier than a group. Turn on captions only for the first listen. If you leave them on while you speak, your eyes do the work and your ear does not.
The ten minutes
- Listen once. Do not speak. Notice one phrase you would like to be able to start. "The thing is..." "What happened was..."
- Listen and mumble. Mouth the words with the voice. You will be late. That is the method. Do not stop the audio every word.
- Listen and speak aloud, still a little behind. One time only. If you get lost, jump back in at the next sentence. Do not rewind five times in the first session or you will train rewinding.
- Stop the audio. Say the idea in your own words, two sentences, about your life if you can twist it. If the clip was about a delayed train, yours might be about a delayed meeting.
- Record step 4, not the whole shadow. The shadow is the warm-up. The recording is the practice you can judge.
Step 4 is what most shadowing guides skip, and it is why people shadow for months and still answer questions with the clip's sentences or with nothing. The clip's English has to be broken and reused. Turn listening into speaking is the same idea for longer audio.
A week, then a change
| Day | Clip | Extra rule |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | 40 seconds | Steps 1 to 5. Keep the recording. |
| Tue | Same clip | Speak a little louder. Do not chase a perfect accent. |
| Wed | Same clip | In step 4, change the people and the place. |
| Thu | A new 40 seconds | Only if Wednesday's own-words sentence was easy. Otherwise repeat. |
| Fri | No new clip | Tell Thursday's idea again without listening first. |
Friday is the test. If you need the audio to find the first word, the shadowing never left the clip. Repeat Friday's idea once more, slower, with a chunk you stole: "The thing is, the meeting moved." Chunks are how shadowing becomes speech. A list of chunks without audio is in how to think in English.
Where it fits in a day
Do it when your hands are free enough to speak and your ears are not needed for traffic. A walk is good. A car is good if you are a passenger, or if you keep your eyes on the road and skip the recording until you park. Do not shadow with a video that makes you look down.
After the ten minutes, stop. Another episode is entertainment. Entertainment in English is allowed. It is not this drill. If you want a person, or something like a person, to ask about the sentence you recorded, do that later in the day, not instead of step 4. Speaking with AI can ask why the meeting moved. Your recording already has the answer. The follow-up is the new work.
If shadowing makes you stiffer, you are copying too literally. Go back to step 4 and tell the idea badly, in short sentences. Natural speech is the goal of the week, not a performance of the clip. How to sound more natural in English is the reminder for the days you start to sound like a news reader in your own kitchen.

Say one example out loud
Pick one line from this page and change it so it is about your day. Say it once without reading. If you want a follow-up after that, FluencyPal can continue in a call or a voice message on Speaking with AI. A daily lesson stays on one pattern, then asks you to talk for a couple of minutes. The free plan includes a limited number of speaking messages. Paid Practice access is one payment and does not auto-renew. Current amounts are on the pricing page.
