italki vs AI English Practice: When to Pay a Person
What a tutor hears that a model misses, what AI is for at 11 p.m., and a hybrid month that does not waste either.

italki is a marketplace of people. Preply is another. An AI speaking tool is a machine that will talk whenever you open it. Learners often pick one side and announce that the other is a scam, or that the human is a luxury they will buy "when they are ready." Ready is a delay. This page is a way to spend money and hours on purpose.
Prices per lesson vary by teacher and by year. Do not trust a number in an article. Look at the teachers who are free at the hour you will actually attend.
What you are buying from a person
A good tutor hour is not "conversation." Conversation is what you can already attempt alone. You are buying attention of a kind software still fakes badly.
- They notice that you never ask a question back.
- They notice that you are polite and impossible to follow, because every sentence starts again.
- They can stop you and say "I lost you here," which is more useful than a rewritten paragraph.
- They can be the audience you are afraid of: a recruiter, a client, a slightly impatient colleague. The fear is part of the training. An AI can pretend. Your body knows it is pretending, and the heart rate stays low. Sometimes that is what you want. Sometimes the low heart rate is why the real meeting still scares you.
- They remember the goal you set, if they are any good and if you remind them.
A bad tutor hour is a person reading a coursebook you could have read cheaper, or a chat about their weekend with no repair. You can waste this money. The protection is the task you bring, written in one sentence: "Interrupt me when my answer has no example." Send it before the lesson.
What you are buying from AI
AI speaking practice, including FluencyPal and a well-instructed general chatbot, sells repetition without scheduling.
- It is there at 11 p.m. after the child is asleep.
- It will do the same interview question six times without sighing.
- It can stay on one grammar point if you demand that. See the instructions in best AI English tutors.
- It does not replace a social life. It also does not judge the third retake, which matters more than people admit. Shame cancels more lessons than price does.
AI will miss things. It may not tell you that you sound annoyed. It may over-correct into writing you would never say. It may accept a vague answer. It will not help you get a visa, a job, or a friend. If a product implies that, close it.
FluencyPal's version of this hour is a call, a voice message, or a role play with a frame already built. A daily lesson is the right shape when you want one pattern and then two minutes of talk, not a full mock meeting. The free plan has a limited number of speaking messages. Paid Practice access is one payment for a period, with no auto-renew. Current amounts are on the pricing page. Buy the tutor pack and the app for different jobs, or buy only the one you will open.
A hybrid month
Four weeks, if you can afford one person and you will also do the solo days. If you cannot afford the person, do the solo days anyway and book a single trial lesson at the end, not a discounted bundle of ten.
Three days a week, 15 minutes, AI or a recorder. One topic from your real week. Three sentences, then a follow-up, then one repaired sentence. This is the volume. Tutors cannot be your volume unless you are rich and free in the afternoon. The alone version is written out in practice speaking English alone.
One day a week, a person, 45 to 60 minutes. You arrive with a recording. The tutor does not choose a random topic. You play twenty seconds and ask "where did you get lost?" Then you retell that piece. Then you do one thing AI cannot be: you ask them how this would land with a customer, a manager, or a friend. Write down one note. Practice that note in the next AI session, not in a new grammar chapter.
One day, optional, input. A course lesson, a page of a book, a show. Input without the three speaking days is how people stay busy. Language apps for busy adults is strict about which block is which.
Skip the hybrid if the tutor hour makes you cancel the week. Some people need the appointment or they do nothing. If that is you, buy the person first and use AI only on the days between, even for five minutes. The point is the reps that actually occur.
How to choose the person
On a marketplace, filter for the hour you can attend, then read for a method, not for a smile.
- They mention interrupting, reformulating, or role play. Good.
- They promise fluency in 30 days. Leave.
- The trial lesson has a task. "We'll see" is a hobby chat.
- You understand their English. A teacher you cannot follow is the wrong level, even if their biography is impressive.
Do the trial with your recording in hand. If they will not look at your recording and prefer their slides, they may still be a good teacher for someone else.
How to choose the AI sessions so they are not cozy
Cozy feels like learning and does not push. Set one constraint per session:
- "Ask me why after every answer."
- "If I speak for less than twenty seconds, ask for an example."
- "Correct only sentences you could not understand. Make them simpler, not fancier."
- For interview month: use the plan in English job interview practice and let the AI be days 3 and 4. Let the human be the dress rehearsal.
In FluencyPal you do not have to paste this every time for ordinary talk, because the session is already a conversation. Paste the spirit of it when you use a general chatbot. That difference is the whole of ChatGPT for learning English.
A decision you can make today
- You have never spoken for a full minute about your day: do not buy a ten-lesson pack. Do two weeks of the three-sentence recording. Then buy one lesson.
- You speak alone easily and go blank with people: the human is the point. Use AI to arrive prepared, not instead of the hour.
- You travel, you work nights, or your town has no partners: AI is the main practice. Book a person online once a month as an audit, not as the habit.
- You want friends: neither italki nor an AI is the friendship. A language exchange might be. Read HelloTalk review with your safety rules on.
The wrong purchase is ten lessons you attend as a vague chat, or an AI subscription you open only to ask for translations. Both are possible. The hybrid month is the antidote: volume in one place, judgment in the other.

About this guide
FluencyPal publishes this article, and FluencyPal is one of the tools it describes. There is no star rating here, and no invented price for another company. Lesson lists and prices change. Read the product's own page before you pay. Judge a tool by the action it asks for in fifteen minutes: tap, listen, read, or speak.
