What we usually talk about
How we treat each other
We’re here to practise speaking, meet people, and understand each other. You don’t need perfect language or the same opinions to belong here.
- Be kind to people learning. Mistakes, accents, and pauses are welcome. Give people time to express themselves. Offer language corrections only when someone asks for them.
- Listen before you reply. Listen to the whole message. If something sounds confusing or rude, ask what the person meant before assuming their intention. It may be a language mistake.
- Check that you understand. Especially when you disagree, briefly explain what you heard: “If I understand you, you mean… Is that right?” Give the person a chance to clarify.
- Ask to understand. Try questions like “What led you to that view?” or “Why is this important to you?” Ask one question at a time. Avoid questions meant to trap, embarrass, or test someone.
- Share your experience without speaking for everyone. Use “I think,” “I feel,” and “In my experience.” Nobody has to represent their country, religion, culture, or any other group.
- Ask before giving advice. Sometimes people want ideas; sometimes they want to be heard. If you’re unsure, ask: “Would you like suggestions, or would you prefer me to listen?”
- Disagree respectfully and stay open. Explain why you see things differently. Challenge ideas without insulting people. It’s okay to say “I don’t know,” change your mind, or finish a conversation without agreement. Insults, harassment, threats, and hateful attacks are not welcome.
- Respect personal boundaries. Before taking a conversation into a sensitive topic, ask whether the other person is comfortable discussing it. Anyone can skip a question, decline to share, or stop a discussion without explaining why.
- Leave room for others. Keep each recording focused on one main point. Avoid sending many messages in a row, and give others time to respond. When replying, say whose message or which point you’re responding to. Nobody owes an immediate reply.
- Protect each other’s privacy. Don’t share another person’s recordings, words, or personal details outside the room without their permission. Share only what you feel comfortable sharing with room members.
- Pause when a conversation gets heated. Take a break instead of sending an angry reply. Respect requests to stop. If someone repeatedly ignores these rules, contact a room admin.
How it works
Join does not put you on a call. You can take your time, and you can stop before you send anything.
1. The room opens.
If you are not signed in yet, you sign in first. You can see that people have left messages, but you cannot read or play them yet.
2. You record a short introduction, when you are ready.
Say a little about yourself. You do not need perfect language. The words appear on the screen, and you can record again. Nothing is shared until you send it.
3. Someone hears that introduction once.
Alex listens to that introduction once. You get a note when there is an answer. You do not have to stay on the page while you wait.
4. After you are welcomed in, you can take part.
Then you can read and play messages, and leave your own. There is no live call. Others reply when they can. A message stays for seven days.
Why a review comes before you join
Hi, I’m Alex. I created FluencyPal, and I’ll guide you into this speaking room. I’ll make sure you feel comfortable.
Your introduction lets me learn a few things about you, so the welcome can be a real one, and so everyone feels safe.
